2025 Canadian Drone Regulation Changes: What You Need to Know
Transport Canada has introduced several important regulatory updates for RPAS operators this year. Here's a complete breakdown of what's changed and how it affects your operations.
Overview of 2025 Changes
2025 has been a significant year for drone regulation in Canada. Transport Canada has been actively updating the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) Part IX to keep pace with the rapid evolution of RPAS technology and operations. Whether you're a recreational flyer or a commercial operator, these changes affect how you plan and execute flights.
Updated Remote Pilot Certificate Requirements
The biggest change this year affects pilot certification. Transport Canada has introduced updated knowledge exam content for both Basic and Advanced operations certificates. The new exams place greater emphasis on airspace awareness, emergency procedures, and understanding NOTAMs. Pilots with existing certificates are not required to re-test, but renewal exams after June 2025 will use the updated question bank.
Additionally, flight review requirements have been clarified. All Advanced operations certificate holders must now complete a flight review every 24 months, conducted by a certified flight reviewer. RPAS WILCO's Flight Reviewer Network makes it easy to find a reviewer near you.
BVLOS Framework Updates
Transport Canada has published new guidance material for BVLOS operations, establishing clearer pathways for operators seeking Special Flight Operations Certificates. The updated framework introduces risk-based categories that align with international standards being developed by ICAO. Lower-risk BVLOS operations in sparsely populated areas now have a streamlined approval process.
Registration and Marking
Drone registration requirements remain in effect for all RPAS between 250g and 25kg. A new change for 2025 is that registration numbers must now be externally visible without disassembling any part of the drone. Internal placement is no longer compliant. If your registration number is currently inside a battery compartment, you'll need to add an external marking.
Controlled Airspace Authorization
NAV CANADA has expanded its automated airspace authorization system, enabling faster approvals for flights near controlled airspace. RPAS WILCO users benefit from direct integration with this system — you can request and receive authorization directly from your flight planning dashboard without picking up the phone.
What This Means for You
We've already updated the RPAS WILCO platform to reflect all 2025 regulatory changes. Your preflight checklists, airspace warnings, and compliance tools are current. If you're preparing for a certificate renewal, our updated practice exams cover the new material.
Staying compliant shouldn't be a full-time job — that's what RPAS WILCO is here for.
